Pierce Purcell v Beaverstown

Sutton advance to the last 16 of the Pierce Purcell with a solid win in blazing heat against Beaverstown.‍ ‍

At home it was chaotic. Cars, people, traffic jams and summer madness in the Burrow Road area but remarkably all players made it on time. The two unbeaten home pairings are Oisin Cunningham / Gordon Linehan and Mark Hogan /Johnny Lappin. Oisin & Gordon were boringly brilliant. No drama. Just controlled golf. They were up early and finished early with a classy 4&3 win. Boom.

Away in Beaverstown there was a little drama as one of the opponents arrived with a minute to spare. Out first went Bryan Coughlan and Tom O’Gorman. Munster men in North Fingal. They certainly weren’t in unfamiliar ground and had done their homework well. They played superb golf. They were 1 down at the turn but then put on the after burners. All of a sudden the app said 3 up, then 4 up. Gareth was on the scene. He couldn’t keep up. It was a birdie-fest and the boys ran out 5up winners. Boom. Boom.

Back in Sutton Mark Hogan and Johnny Lappin were in a battle. They were never down but never much up. On 15, Beaverstown found that nasty pot bunker left. We were in the hollow putting on. A win for Sutton? Not quite. They left their bunker shot to 6 inches and mark needed to hole a clutch 5 footer for half. On 16 he drained a 7 footer to set up a great finish. 1 up, 2 to go. A half will do.

In glorious Beaverstown, Callum Buchan and James Kelly were long and strong and beautiful and brilliant. But there were 1 down. On 17 - a hard par 3 they blasted a bunker shot to a foot and managed to get to all square. Kelly drove it up the 18th fairway and Callum wedged it to the front. It was the crucial half. Meanwhile in Sutton, Johnny milled his drive down 18. Mark wedged on and that was also the crucial half in par. It must be said Beaverstown is a most beautiful golf course in magnificent condition and their members were very welcoming.

So, It’s Ashbourne next for this classy team. They will take them on with quiet and modest confidence.
